Over 400 women a year are losing their lives to femicide in Turkey, slain too often by their own partners, brothers, fathers. Devastatingly, this is hardly a regionally isolated crisis.

This visual prayer is a conjuring of power, a cutting of cords through repetition. A prayer for my sisters alive and unborn. A prayer for the families left to mourn. My maternal grandmother’s words pouring forth. The stop motion loop lasts 38 seconds, one centisecond to honor each victim whose death has been reported since 2008, including the 400 we’ll lose this year if trends hold true. In the end, only an afterimage remains, a lingering residue suspended in silence.

An improvised visual letter written in alternating words, from one to another. This film is the first in a series of "letters to Pablo" and was made for the 2019 Georgetown Super 8 Film Festival in Seattle. The letter that gave form to the film was improvised, written in alternating words between me and my collaborator with no editing. The text emerged as an essentially meaningless exchange between fictional characters, thus ripe to be imbued with meaning.

The letters that gave form to the film were improvised, written in alternating words between me and my collaborator with no editing. The text emerged as an essentially meaningless exchange between fictional characters, thus ripe to be imbued with meaning. The second letter is translated and voiced in Spanish by Barcelona-based Argentinian musician and artist Pablo Schvarzman, whose songs Citrus Máxima and Camellia Sinesis from the album "Seeds" form the soundtrack to the film.
